QUESTIONS MOST COMMONLY ASKED ABOUT DRUGS USED IN AN IVF CYCLE
Synarel Nasal Spray/Suprecur Nasal Spray
Q: What does the drug do?
A: This drug reduces your own natural hormone levels, so that we can introduce artificial (drugs) at specific times, thus achieving greater cycle control.
Q: Does this drug have any side effects?
A: There are several side effects but those that are most common are:
- Headaches
- Hot Flushes
- Changes in emotional stage (weepy, forgetful)
- Vaginal dryness and breast tenderness
If you are worried about any symptoms, please contact the Clinic for advice.
Q: If I get a headache can I take anything for it?
A: If necessary only take paracetamol or paracetamol based products. If you need to take any other medication please seek advice from the Clinic Pharmacist.
Q: How must this product be stored?
A: Below 25 degrees centigrade, away from direct heat and light.
Q: How long after it has been opened does the medicine keep?
A: Five weeks after opening, any remaining medicine should be discarded.
Q: If I sneeze, what do I do?
A: If you sneeze immediately after using the nasal spray, repeat the dose. If you sneeze after 10 minutes it is not necessary to repeat the dose. Repeated sneezing after using the spray may suggest that you have a problem with absorbing the drug, therefore please contact the Clinic for advice, as we may need to change your medication.
Q: Can I use nasal decongestants whilst on this medication?
A: Should you need to use a nasal decongestant, use Synarel/Suprecur first. Do not use the decongestant for at least 30 minutes after.
Q: Will I have a period after I start taking this medicine?
A: Yes you will have a period at about the usual time in your menstrual cycle, but it may be a few days late. If you haven't had a period by the time of your baseline appointment then you need to notify the Clinic.
Q: How long will I be on this medicine?
A: You will be on this medicine for approximately two weeks before the baseline appointment and then throughout treatment until the day of HCG (approximately another two weeks).
Q: How important is it to take my medicine at the same time each day?
A: Try and find a time that is convenient for you to take your medicine, a couple of hours either side of this will not be a problem.
Suprefact Injection
Most questions that relate to the use of this medicine have been covered above. The only one to add is that this medicine can produce a localised reaction (slight redness) at the site of the injection. If this does occur, it usually subsides after a short time. If the reaction is severe or lasts for several hours it is advisable to speak to the Nurses or Doctor.
Suprefact injection can be kept in the refrigerator but needs to be at room temperature for approximately half an hour before being given, as cold injections have a tendency to sting more.
Zoladex Injection
This drug reduces your own natural hormone levels, so that we can introduce artificial hormones (drugs) at specific times, thus achieving greater cycle control. Research shows that in women with severe endometriosis, treatment with this medication for 3-6 months can improve your chance of becoming pregnant with assisted conception treatment.
Gonal-F Injections
Q: What does this drug do?
A: Gonal-F is a hormone that stimulates the ovaries to work, producing follicles, which contain eggs. Gonal-F is the latest and purest form of this hormone being prepared by recombinant technology.
Q: How is this product stored?
A: Store below 25 degrees centigrade, away from direct heat and light.
Q: Does this drug have any side effects?
A: Side effects are rare. Very few people experience any reaction around the site of injection. Patients must be aware that ovarian hyperstimulation is possible, so if nausea, vomiting and or abdominal pain is present, the Clinic must be notified.
Q: How long will I be using this medicine?
A: You will remain in the initial dose as prescribed for seven days, then we will ask you to return for a blood test and scan; this will show us how the follicles are growing. Depending on your response, we may need to alter the dose and or continue for longer (approximately 10-12 days stimulation will be required). You will be back to the Clinic for regular monitoring from stimulation day 8.
Q: What time do I give my injections?
A: Injections should be administered in the evening. If possible keep to the same time each day.
Ovitrelle (HCG) Injection
Q: What does this drug do?
A:Ovitrelle is the last injection you will need for this treatment cycle. This drug matures the eggs (oocytes) inside the follicles ready for collection (oocyte retrieval). This injection is given appproximately 32-38 hours before egg collection; the nurses will give you an exact time to administer the injection.
Cyclogest Pessaries
Q: What does this drug do?
A: Cyclogest is a natural progesterone. This is a hormone that helps to prepare the lining of the womb for pregnancy. In a naturally conceived pregnancy this hormone rises in sufficient enough amounts to maintain pregnancy. Therefore Cyclogest is given as a supplement.
Q: How do I use this medicine?
A: Cyclogest is normally used vaginally. After insertion of the pessary, it is important that you lie down or rest for 20 minutes to allow it to be absorbed.
Q: Can I use my pessary rectally?
A: The pessary has been prescribed for vaginal use, but if deemed necessary by the doctor it can be used rectally.
Q: What happens if I start to bleed?
A: If you experience any vaginal bleeding you must notify the Clinic for advice. This may be an instance when you will be asked to use the pessaries rectally until bleeding stops. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU STOP THE MEDICATION UNLESS DIRECTED BY THE DOCTOR.
Q: Does this medication have any side effects?
A: You may experience a feeling of bloatedness, and perhaps some breast tenderness.
