If the number of normal, live sperm is very low, or the sperm has been surgically retrieved, or where antisperm antibody binding is observed, it may be necessary to inject a single sperm directly into each suitable egg post egg retrieval.
In some cases where egg quality is sub-optimal, ICSI may also be advised.
In addition, where a couple have previously been through the IVF regime and fertilisation rates have been low, ICSI may be advised by the consultant or embryologist.
